Sport Club Internacional

Sport Club Internacional, also known as Inter, is a traditional Brazilian football team from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, founded on April 4, 1909. Their home stadium is the Beira-Rio, capacity 56,000. They play in red shirts, white shorts and socks.
As of 2006, Internacional are the FIFA Club World Cup champions.
Early in the 20th Century, three young men from São Paulo who had recently arrived in Porto Alegre wanted to play soccer. But were not admitted at any club in town, because they were newcomers in Porto Alegre so they decided to found their own club. On the night of Monday, April 4, 1909, in the basement of a house, and driven by three men (brothers Henrique and José Poppe Leão, and Luiz Madeira Poppe) 40 young men (twice more people than expected to attend the reunion) founded Sport Club Internacional.

Grêmio Foot-Ball Portoalegrense

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, usually known simply as Grêmio, is a traditional Brazilian football team from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, founded on September 15, 1903. Major titles captured by Grêmio include one Club World Cup, two Copa Libertadores de América (the South American "Champions League"), two national championships and four national cups.

On September 7, 1903, Sport Club Rio Grande, the first Brazilian football team, played an exhibition match in Porto Alegre. An entrepreneur from Sorocaba, São Paulo called Cândido Dias, watched the match and became enchanted by the sport. During the match, the ball deflated. As the owner of the only football of Porto Alegre, he lent his ball to the players, and the match was resumed. After the match, he learned from the players instructions about football and how to found a club. On September 15, 1903, 32 people, including Cândido Dias, met at Salão Grau restaurant and founded the club. Carlos Luiz Bohrer was elected the club's first president.

Fluminense Football Club

Fluminense Football Club is a sports club based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was founded on July 21, 1902. The word Fluminense derives from Latin fluvium, "river", rio in Portuguese. It is also the name for a native of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Football is the most heralded sport among fans and the management. Fluminense won once the national championship, in 1984, and won in 1970 the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, which was a predecessor of the national championship.
Oscar Cox introduced football to Rio. He played in Switzerland during his studies in Lausanne. When he returned to Rio, aged 22, he gathered a group of men who also wanted to play this as-yet relatively unknown sport. After playing some matches in Rio and in São Paulo, they decided to found a club.
The foundation meeting took place on 21 July, 1902, at the home of Horácio da Costa Santos on Rua Marques de Abrantes 51. Oscar Cox was elected the first president.
Fluminense's own stadium is Estádio das Laranjeiras, built in 1905. The maximum capacity is 8,000 people but it was previously 25,000 . Public interest in refurbishment of the stadium took place in the sixties, when the club sold a part of its grounds for the construction of what is now the Rua Pinheiro Machado. Laranjeiras is the oldest stadium in Brazil, and is heritage listed.

Clube de Regatas Vaco da Gama

Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, usually known as Vasco da Gama or simply Vasco, (after the famous Portuguese explorer of the same name) is a Brazilian sports club from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, founded on August 21, 1898 (although the football department started on November 5, 1915). It was founded by Portuguese immigrants, and it is still the team traditionally supported by the Portuguese community of Rio de Janeiro.
Their home stadium is the São Januário, capacity 36,273.
In the late 19th century rowing was the most important sport in Rio de Janeiro. At this time, four young men who did not want to travel to Niterói to row with the boats of Gragoatá Club decided to found a rowing club.
Inspired by the celebrations of the 4th centenary of the first sail from Europe to India, the founders chose the name of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama to baptise the new club.

Sport Club Recife

Sport Club do Recife, more popularly known as Sport in Recife or Sport Recife in Southern Brazil, are a football team from Recife, Pernambuco.
On May 13, Sport Club do Recife was founded by Guilherme de Aquino Fonseca after a meeting between the 23 founders at Associação dos Empregados do Comércio (In English "Commerce Employees Association") of Pernambuco, who loaned their great hall to the newly-formed club.
The first Sport Recife match was in 1905, against a team called English Eleven. The match ended in a draw. Torquatro Gonçalves scored a goal for Sport.

Sport's major title was the CBF Brazilian Championship of 1987. The victory did not come without controversy. Annoyed by the inconsistency of the Brazilian Football Confederation, the thirteen clubs with the largest fan bases in Brazil formed a group, known as the Clube dos 13, to organize a parallel championship, the Copa União, free from CBF authority (a move not unlike the creation of club-administered football leagues all over Europe). Since the official championship would have been a fiasco without the most popular teams in the country, the CBF decided the winner and runner-up of the Copa União (also known as Green Module) should face the winner and runner-up of the Yellow Module in order to decide the Brazilian champion -- a move which was not approved by the Clube dos 13.
Consequently, Flamengo and Internacional, winners and runner-ups of the Copa União, refused to face Sport and Guarani , which had shared the Yellow Module title after deciding to interrupt penalty shoot-out. Since Flamengo and Internacional did not show up, the CBF championship finals consisted only of a rematch of the Yellow Module finals. In the first game, in Campinas, both teams tied 1-1. On February 7, 1988, Sport beat Guarani 1-0 and became the first Northeastern team to win the national title (a feat only matched by Bahia in the 1988 championship).
Clube dos 13 and CND (Conselho Nacional de Desportos - "Sports National Council") supported Flamengo and Internacional in their claim and declared Flamengo as the 1987 Brazilian Champions. Ultimately, however, CBF declared Sport to be the national champions, and the club, along with Guarani, represented Brazil in the 1988 Copa Libertadores de América.

São Paulo Futebol Clube

São Paulo Futebol Clube, usually called São Paulo FC or just São Paulo, is a traditional Brazilian football team from São Paulo, founded on January 25, 1930, and re-founded on December 16, 1935. As of November 2006, São Paulo is the current Brazilian Champion. The team is the most successful club in Brazil, with several titles of national and international grade. That includes three World Club Crowns (2 as Intercontinental Cup, and 1 as FIFA Club World Championship), three Libertadores da América Cup and one Conmebol Cup (currently replaced by South American Cup). The club and its supporters are regarded to have a special relationship with Libertadores, as they are the club in Brazil with most titles (1992, 1993, 2005) and finals played (1974, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2005, 2006), with their attendance boosting during the championship compared to the regular season.
Their home stadium is Cícero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium (Morumbi), capacity 80,000.

In 1900, the Clube Atlético Paulistano is founded. After winning several championships, due to the football professionalization, they decided to end their activities in this sport, as did Associação Atlética das Palmeiras. Then, the players and the supporters of both teams founded the São Paulo Futebol Clube on January 25, 1930. São Paulo's playfield was called Floresta (Forest), so the team was known as São Paulo da Floresta. In this year, the team was runner-up on the Paulista Championship, and in 1931 São Paulo won a championship for the first time. In 1933, São Paulo played the first professional football match in Brazil: 5-1 against Santos.
Due to many mistakes made by the club's board, the team was deeply in debt. So, they merged with Clube de Regatas Tietê. The football department was closed on May 14, 1935.
Just after the merge with Tietê that buried São Paulo da Floresta, the founders and re-founders created the Grêmio Tricolor, which originated Clube Atlético São Paulo, on June 4, 1935, and, finally, São Paulo Futebol Clube, founded on December 16 of the same year. The first game was against Portuguesa Santista on January 25, 1936. The match was almost cancelled, due to the city's anniversary.
The club was already born very popular. However, it was very weak. So they decided to make it stronger with a new merge, this time with Estudantes Paulista, from Mooca neighborhood. With this new merge, they reached the second place on 1938 Paulista Championship.

Santos Futebol Clube

Santos Futebol Clube, usually known simply as Santos, is a Brazilian football team from Santos, São Paulo state, Brazil. The club has been nicknamed Peixe (literally, "Fish") for decades, but the usual mascot is a whale . The nickname evokes the circumstance that Santos, Brazil, the city where it is located, is a seaport, when all other big clubs from São Paulo are from inland. A fan of the team is known as a Santista.
It was founded as Santos Foot-Ball Club on April 14, 1912, through the initiative of three sports enthusiasts from Santos: Raimundo Marques, Mário Ferraz de Campos and Argemiro de Souza Júnior. The club won its first state tournament in 1935, and again 20 years later, in 1955.
They play in an all-white strip, with a second choice uniform of black and white vertical stripes and black shorts. However, according to the club's statute, the team's first choice uniform is a striped shirt with white shorts and white socks.
Pelé (chosen as "Athlete of the Century" by the IOC in 1999) started his career with the team in 1956, at the age of 15, and remained with Santos for 17 years. With Pelé, Santos won the Intercontinental Cup in 1962 and 1963.
Santos' home stadium is the Urbano Caldeira (also known as Vila Belmiro), inaugurated on October 12, 1916. Nowadays it has a capacity of 20,120 peoples.

Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras

Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, usually called Palmeiras. Is a Brazilian football team from São Paulo, Brazil, founded on August 26, 1914, as Società Sportiva Palestra Italia, but changed to the current name on September 14, 1942. It is one of the most popular and traditional Brazilian clubs.
Palmeiras was founded by four Italian men who were members of the Italian-speaking community of São Paulo and was initially named Società Sportiva Palestra Italia. Its original colors were red, white and green (those of Italy). The name change occurred during World War II. Brazil entered the war supporting the allies and its dictatorship forced Palestra Italia to change its name because of the reference to Italy. The original badge is still present in the current one and the club has used red as a third colour (mostly in friendship games during the club's 75th anniversary).
Several other clubs whose names alluded to enemy foreign countries either disappeared (like Germania) or were renamed during the same period. Another Brazilian club that was once also called Palestra Italia is Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. However Palmeiras was the original Palestra Italia, since it was founded about a decade before Cruzeiro.
Palmeiras plays at the Palestra Itália stadium (also nicknamed Parque Antártica because the area was a park built by Antarctica Paulista Company in the beginning of the last century). The venue has seats for 35,000

Clube Náutico Capibaribe

Clube Náutico Capibaribe, also known as Náutico, is a Brazilian sports club, including a professional football team, in Recife, Pernambuco.
Náutico is the only football club in Pernambuco that has won the state championship 6 times in a row (from 1963 to 1968).
After the end of the War of Canudos, the rowing increased its popularity among the Recife people, being disputed many competitions along the Capibaribe river. One rowing group, commanded by João Victor da Cruz Alfarra, prepared a boat race to entertain General Artur Costa and his soldiers, who fought in the war. The boat race was disputed on November 21, 1897. After this competition, a year later, another rowing group was formed, by warehouse employees at Duque de Caxias and Rangel streets. They founded a club called Clube dos Pimpões. The other group members, who organized the rowing competition in the previous year, became encouraged, and in 1898 they played against Club dos Pimpões several times at Casa dos Banhos.
On April 7, 1901 these two rival groups of rowing players joined and founded Clube Náutico Capibaribe.
Only since 1905 Náutico started its football department, and the first team was set in the following year, and was formed by Englishmen, but they played only on Sundays at Campo de Santana or at Derby prairie.

Clube de Regatas do Flamengo

Clube de Regatas do Flamengo is a Brazilian multisport club from Rio de Janeiro.
Despite not being the club's official name, Flamengo has become the term used by most to refer not just to the football team, but also the entire sporting association.
Flamengo's football team -- the most popular in Brazil with 36million estimated supporters -- placed 9th in FIFA Clubs of the 20th Century.
Flamengo was founded on November 15, 1895 .
Flamengo only embraced football when a group of dissatisfied players from Fluminense Football Club broke away from the club following a dispute with the board. The players decided to join Flamengo because Borgeth, who was the team's captain, was also a rower for Flamengo. Admittance of the new members was approved on November 8, 1911. A motion against the club taking part in football tournaments was defeated, and the members assembly officially created the football team on December 24, 1911.

Cruzeiro Esporte Clube

Cruzeiro Esporte Clube is a Brazilian football team, from the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, founded on January 2, 1921. It is the only Brazilian team to have won the triple crown of Brazilian football for winning the Brazilian League, Brazilian Cup, State Championship, and all in 2003.
Cruzeiro is one of the oldest and most traditional clubs in Brazil. They have never been relegated or removed from the Brazilian Série A (along with Internacional, Flamengo, and Vasco da Gama).
Cruzeiro was born off a political administrative crisis at Yale, one of the first sporting clubs of Belo Horizonte, a city where already some Italian immigrants militated. The Italians in Belo Horizonte, wanted to follow the example of the Italians in São Paulo, who had established a football club, the Palestra Itália, now Palmeiras. The people of Belo Horizonte wanted the Italian colony in Minas Gerais to have its own club as well.
Yale, formed in 1910, competed in the Campeonato de Belo Horizonte (Belo Horizonte Championship) up to 1925, when it gave up football. The majority of the players of Yale were of Italian origin and when the Palestra Itália was created, had a total bond to the new club. With the disagreement in Yale, in a rainy night on December 1920, Yale separated and the Palestra Itália (of Belo Horizonte) was born, also known as Palestra Mineiro.
In January 1942, Brazil entered the Second World War and a decree of the Federal Government forbade the use of terms from enemy nations in entities, institutions, establishments, etc. With this, the Italian name was removed and the directors of the club took 10 months to create a new name and symbol for the club that was entirely Brazilian. The name was changed to Ypiranga, but this name did'nt got the affection of the congress of the Advice, so this name was removed. In October a consensus of the directors approved the name Cruzeiro Esporte Clube. Cruzeiro is the constellation of the Southern Cross, and can only be seen from the southern hemisphere, therefore, not related to Italy.
